Contemporary Wood Sculpture

My sculptures explore the quiet dialogue between the built world and the raw fluidity of nature. This artistic direction developed several years ago when a shoulder injury made easel painting impossible; I discovered that the rhythmic, downward motion of carving offered a new way to remain creative.

Working primarily with Baltic birch plywood—a humble, industrial material—I found unexpected elegance within its layers.

At the time I lived in California. I used sculpture to process the strong emotions I experienced on trips to the Pacific Ocean, San Gabriel Mountains, or Joshua Tree. Now that I'm back in Ontario, my current work is deeply influenced by the Canadian landscape, specifically:

• The geology of the Niagara Escarpment,
• sedimentary patterns found along the Bruce Peninsula, and
• the geometry of snow drifts.
• Even the holds of indoor rock climbing, a hobby of mine, find their way into my work.

The Process: My workflow balances computer precision with manual labour. Each piece begins as a hand sketch, is refined via Computer-Aided Design, and returns to the workbench for the final hand-carving. This tension between engineered precision and human touch results in forms that feel both structured and alive.

Mixed Media Painting

Since 2009, I have painted the "in-between" spaces of daily life. I'm drawn particularly to the hidden corners of the urban environment—underpasses, laneways, and graffitied walls where nature begins to reclaim concrete. I'm also interested in the energy of busy intersections and pedestrian movement.

I build each image through a process of dense layering:

• Mediums: A combination of oil and acrylic paint, spray paint, and markers.
• Techniques: Stenciling, collage, and on-location studies.

2026 Artistic Direction: While these urban themes remain foundational, I'm currently leaning into abstraction to see what emerges when I move away from literal subjects.

Biography

I took the scenic route to becoming a full-time artist. Beforehand, I worked as a computer programmer, high school teacher, and translator. I bounced between five countries—the US, Venezuela, Britain, Italy, and Spain.

Now, my work hangs in collections all over the world (which goes to show: if you dabble in enough fields, something eventually sticks).

I share my life with my supportive spouse, Aitana Guia, and our two teenage daughters.

When not covered in paint or dust in the studio, you might find me playing the violin, rock climbing, playing beer league ice hockey, or taking a quiet moment for birdwatching.
